For the default values in the IWT GREENING TOOL the following sources have been used:

  • The study ‘Contribution to impact assessment of measures for reducing emissions of inland navigation’ (Panteia, et al., 2013). For more information on the assumptions made in this study for the operational and sailing/engine hours, see ANNEX II;
  • IWT cost models on business level (by vessel type, operating mode and market segment):
    • Rhine region: the cost model for this region has been developed by PANTEIA/NEA and is used on a yearly basis for the CBRB cost development reports1 . For more information on the methodology for fixed and variable costs components used in this model, see ANNEX II.
    • Danube region: for the Danube, costs information is available for two common type of vessels that sail within this region. The information has been provided by DST.
  • The Emission profiles for engines 1974-2003 were based on the report ‘Methodologies for estimating shipping emissions in the Netherlands’ (TNO, 2010) by Denier van der Gon, H., Hulskotte, J.
